Meaningful assessment process
If you want a quick in and out autism or AuDHD assessment, we are not the service for you. If you want a thorough and meaningful diagnostic process that helps make sense of who you are, then we are here to support you through that.
As well as diagnosing autism and AuDHD, we also help you understand the extra 'stars' within the autism and AuDHD constellation such as;

PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance or Persistent Drive for Autonomy),

Executive function (how the brain manages itself by regulating emotions, planning and remembering things, starting activities, coping with change),

Sensory profiles and differences,

Impact on mental health.
Many autistic/AuDHD women are experiencing co-occurring mental health struggles, which are often due to shame and masking. Some women are misdiagnosed with a mental health 'disorder' due to a lack of understanding of autism and AuDHD. You can find more information on our combined autism and ADHD assessment here.
All of our assessments include a Clinical Psychologist with specialist mental health training. If mental health is a concern, we will help you understand this and make recommendations for support.
We also have expertise in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) with our highly specialist Speech and Language Therapists. We can help you explore other ways to communicate when speaking becomes too draining.
Our private autism and AuDHD assessments are extremely detailed so you can really understand your differences and what they means for you in your life going forward.

Feedback from our clients
"Becky and Harriet go well beyond the typical assessment types and get to know how you feel in your day to day experiences and environment"
"My assessment honestly gave me the gift of finding that missing puzzle piece in my self-identity. It has brought me a lot of clarity, a sense of direction and purpose."
"Anna was lovely and really listened to me and she checked she had understood my experiences. It was a very validating assessment. "
"It has helped me to better understand my unique self and has directed me to focus on activities/work that will energise, rather than deplete me."
"It has given me better self awareness as I navigate and transition into perimenopause and a hope that I will mask my differences less."
"I highly recommend them. They’re the voice you should have in your head when you think about autism (and ADHD), not those who try to change you or call you difficult or crazy."
"They don’t make you feel like something is wrong with you. That actually encourage you to be the best, most accepting you."
"The report was set out very clearly so I can clearly see how I meet the criteria which is really helpful."
"I really like the neuro-affirmative language in the report criteria, which I can actually relate to much more than when described as deficits"

If you proceed to a full assessment...

- We may use questionnaires and standardised measures, but they are only one part of the process.
- The focus is on understanding your lived experiences, not just surface observations.
- We recognise that autism and AuDHD can often be masked.
- Our service is inclusive of women, trans women, and non-binary people.
Who will be assessing me?
Autistic Women is a team of health experts who have been assessing and supporting autistic and AuDHD women for decades. Many of us are neurodivergent ourselves and/or have neurodivergent family members. Read more about the team here.
Dr Becky Quicke runs the service and provides clinical oversight. She is a clinical psychologist who specialises in autism and AuDHD assessments for girls and women. Read more about Dr Becky Quicke here.
We'll also discuss your assessment within our wider team, which will always include a Clinical Psychologist and a Speech and Language Therapist. As well as ensuring we reach the right diagnostic conclusion, the team's wealth of knowledge and experience gives extra layers of insight and understanding of your differences, which is shared with you at feedback and in your report.
Frequently asked questions
No. We do not offer services for NHS right to choose.
- Following your online screening assessment, you will complete some questionnaires and forms. We also have forms for a relative or close friend to complete, if you're comfortable with them doing so.
- You’ll meet one of our lovely and supportive clinicians online or in our lovely Knutsford room (you can choose) for one or two appointments. It takes approximately 3 hours for an autism or ADHD assessment and 5 hours if combined autism and ADHD. You can be alone or have someone there to support and add information if that's helpful to you.
- Your clinician will then reflect, analyse all of the assessment information and write a detailed report. This includes an 'evidence' section, with easy to understand tables linking information gathered during your assessment to the diagnostic criteria so you'll know exactly why or why not you were diagnosed. It also includes summary sections for what we learned together about you and your neurotype during the assessment (strengths and challenges), how you are impacted by these and what you may need going forward.
- Your clinician will then discuss your assessment with the Autistic Women team. This is to make a conclusion about diagnosis and discuss details of what you may need in your feedback appointment and any support going forward after your assessment.
- You'll then have a feedback appointment with your clinician and receive your extremely detailed report.
YES, absolutely they do.
You can read specifically about how on the links below;
Not necessarily, no.
As an adult, the most important information we can get for a diagnostic assessment is your internal experiences. In other words, how you experience social situations, friendships, work, emotions, sensory environments and so on. How you behave isn’t necessarily a good indicator for whether you are autistic and/or ADHD. This is especially the case for autistic women like you who have learned to hide and mask their differences throughout their lives so far.
So, if being face to face helps you to be more comfortable in expressing your experiences then we advise that. If you’re more comfortable in your home and online, then we would advise you have an online assessment with us.
We can chat about this in more detail in your screening call if that would be helpful.
That’s totally ok and we expect some women coming to us will have periods of mutism during their assessment.
Firstly, we will help you to feel as comfortable as possible. If at home, we encourage you to have anything that helps to relax you, blankets, fidgets, whatever helps.
If in our office, we encourage the same – bring a bag of your comfort things.
Secondly, we encourage you to act in anyway that feels most comforting to you. That may be walking around, lying down, bouncing, rubbing or fidgeting your hands/fingers, whatever it is for you. We know that it’s likely you’ve learned to mask and not show these things, but our assessments are a place where we not only accept any and every ‘quirk’, but we expect them. Many of us do them too.
Thirdly, there are ways that you can express yourself without speaking. You can write, draw, text by phone, type on a laptop etc. Plus, we gather written information from you, so there's less pressure to say everything in your assessment appointment.
If you are semi speaking, do let us know at screening/registration as we have some clinicians who specialise in helping you with alternative communication, and we will pair you up appropriately.
Whilst we're aware that you’ll want to know as soon as the assessment appointment is completed, we don’t tell you straight away and for good reason.
It’s really important for your clinician to reflect and review all of the assessment information and then bring it to our team meeting to discuss.
Once we’ve concluded, your clinician will then arrange your feedback session. They will tell you the outcome in that session and you can use the time however you would like. You can ask what led to the conclusion, or you can talk about what that means for you, how you are feeling – a chance to process your initial emotional reaction. Or you can ask about practical ways that you can best support yourself at home and how to share your diagnosis (if given) with others, including your work colleagues. Or a mix of all of the above.
We are here to support you in this process and that final feedback session can be tailored to your needs. You can have someone with you if you choose.
After your feedback session, you will be emailed your detailed report and a 1 page letter with your diagnosis/es, if given.
You can show the report and/or letter to any health professional, employer etc as proof of your diagnosis.
You will also receive details of our post diagnosis support partners. You may have been recommended someone specifically within your assessment report.

Yes, absolutely. Our expertise is in assessing those who mask or camouflage and who experience autism and ADHD differences internally rather than necessarily showing it in their external behaviour. This is often due to conditioning and common in those assigned female at birth and identify as a girl/woman, trans, non-binary.
Please contact us directly if you have any questions or queries.
Whilst we cannot predict the behaviour of every authority and employer, it is our belief that most accept diagnoses from assessments that meet NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines and are led by experienced clinicians.
Our assessments meet NICE guidelines. Throughout the whole assessment process you will be assessed by two highly specialised clinicians, including a Clinical Psychologist.
We gather relevant information from numerous sources including standardised questionnaires and assessment tools.
We're expert at assessing autism in women as well as ruling in or out other possible neurodevelopmental/learning/mental health/trauma issues that might explain or impact your differences.
At the end of your assessment (if you receive a diagnosis), as well as your detailed diagnostic report, you will receive a ‘To whom it may concern’ one page letter that you can take to any authority or employer. This letter is formal proof of your diagnosis/es. It also gives you legal protection as per the Equality Act 2010.
